Information for Aged Care Quality Assessment Training participants

We have had in excess of 500 people attend this course since its inception; 140 to date in 2006 alone.

Here’s what some of our participants this year have said about this course:

“I have learnt so much, and am now more in tune with the expected outcomes. I’m excited about going back to our facility to teach the staff (and myself) to be less process driven.”

“A great course that will benefit people who have been in aged care for a long time. It enlightens you to be more resident outcome focused rather than process focused.”

“The course really changed my thinking about Accreditation”

Overview:

The management of care for the elderly has always received, and will continue to receive, attention and scrutiny from a number of different parties. To ensure that the quality of care continues to be appropriate, the Federal Government required all residential aged care facilities to partake in a system of ongoing accreditation visits and support contacts undertaken by the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency. The primary objective of this course is to train potential assessors for the residential aged care industry.

However, the majority or our course participants are from the industry and are seeking the best information possible on the Agency’s approach to audits and how they can prepare themselves for accreditation and support contacts; in particular the increased regime of unannounced visits.

This course is one of the best and most practical courses we offer to complete your understanding of systems and the Accreditation Standards.

Your Course Presenters:

Our course presenters make the difference between a good course and a great course. Our presenters have been in the “real world” managing organisations and this practical knowledge is interlaced in the form of examples and advice. Lois and Brian are the people who separate this course from our competitors.

Course Approvals:

This course has been approved by the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency Ltd. as meeting the “Basic Auditor” requirements for the purposes of Aged Care Quality Assessor Registration. Refer www.rabqsa.com for further information on Aged Care Assessor registration.

Course Name: Aged Care Internal Auditor - 3 Days

Course Code: AA03

Click here to download the synopsis of this course

Overview:

What a powerful program! Do you conduct internal audits in your residential aged care facility? Think of this – if internal audits are undertaken to the same skill level as the external assessors, then noncompliance would be rare! Providers must have the confidence that systems are in place and functional everyday in today’s regime of Unannounced Visits.

In House Options :

What makes this program even more appealing? This course can be conducted in your facility on an in-house basis! The Systems 3 Group will tailor this course around your system, using your audit program. Your staff are trained in your program but with the same underlying themes as the external assessors.

In House courses may be enhanced through live audits. Live audits involve undertaking an audit in your service using system and records. This provides your staff with specific internal audit skills in your system.

Not looking for a 3 day program, then we have the AA02 – 2 day Aged Care Internal Auditor and AA04 – 4 day Assessing an Aged Care Management System programs as well.

Course Name: Understanding the Accreditation Standards - specifically for Care Staff - 1 day

Course Code: MA07

Click here to download the synopsis of this course

Overview:

What comes first – the resident or the paperwork?..... Of course it’s the resident! However, all too frequently it seems the other way around. We know that all aged care staff work hard and desire to have the resident’s best interests at heart – but sometime this desire gets lost in the day to day organised commotion.

This is a practical and highly interactive 1 day program focusing on how the Accreditation Standards relate to care staff. This program is all about building knowledge – the knowledge your care staff need to understand what has to be done by them to support your service in meeting the Accreditation Standards. It sets out to demystify the standards by increasing understanding. Demystifying will lead to greater confidence – confidence in using systems, confidence in improving systems, confidence in talking to assessors and “selling the good care you provide”.

In House Options :

This course is a wonderful program, but can be made even more useful by basing the program on your systems with your care staff.

Overview:

Don’t underestimate your support staff! Support staff are an integral part of quality service and resident care. Sometimes there is an overemphasis on clinical staff, and the training of the clinical staff. Yet Support Staff have equal interaction, if not more interaction residents. There are Expected Outcomes in the Accreditation Standards which have a direct impact on the Support Staff. As in the past, Agency Assessors will need to talk to your Support Staff to gain information on resident care. How prepared are they?

This program is all about building knowledge – the knowledge your support staff need to understand what has to be done by them to support your service in meeting the Accreditation Standards. This is not the usual chemical, manual handling or infection control training. This program aims to provide an uncomplicated appreciation of where management are coming from when services are required to be delivered in a certain way.

Monitoring Systems - Taking Control - 2 days

Course Code: MA09

Click here to download the synopsis of this course

overview:

Many senior staff in residential aged care are struggling with the amount of systems related work which “has” to be done. Systems related work takes time away from resident care and adds to cost.

  • Are you getting a good return on your invested time and money on audits?
  • How do you demonstrate outcomes to assessors?
  • What systems should you monitor?
  • What are you actually doing with the information, does it add value to resident results?

This course will separate the myths from fact. It will allow you to make informed decisions about what monitoring systems you have to have in place versus what you choose to have in place. This 2 day program will assist you to evaluate your systems review activities. It will help you know how to evaluate whether you are achieving quality outcomes, particularly in relation to needs of residents and other stakeholders.

This course is one of the best training investments you will make as it will decrease staff frustration and confusion in relation to the requirement of auditing, surveys, meetings, questionnaires, etc. by providing the latest information on monitoring systems.

Overview:

Please let’s not lose our valuable staff to other industries – let’s look after them! There is no doubt that managing an aged care service is getting more and more challenging. Recruiting and retaining staff can be significantly influenced by the manager/supervisor’s leadership style. This includes the ability to coordinate staff work practices, the management of staff behaviours, the empowerment of work teams and most importantly, getting people to work for you, and with you in a stimulating and fun environment.

This is not just another theoretical course in human resource management! This is an interactive workshop developed by The Systems 3 Group, to provide a practical, user-friendly guide to supervisors and managers in the management of staff. The context of the requirements of the Accreditation Standards Expected Outcome 1.6 – Human Resources is also discussed

The goal of the training is to provide supervisors and managers with strategies that really work in dealing with day to day human resource management issues.

Course Name: Cultural Diversity - Meeting the need of all residents - 1 day

Course Code: MA11

Click here to download the synopsis of this course

Overview:

Imagine if failing health requires you leave your home and family to start a new life in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people. Now imagine if this was not your country of origin. What kind of cultural shock will you face? A new home, new neighbours and new cultural norms may lead to confusion, alienation and loneliness.

The proportion of culturally and linguistically diverse residents is increasing in aged care. Our duty of care is to develop the relevant skills and knowledge to assist older Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) residents to have the same opportunity for quality of care and life as all other residents. When staff demonstrate a sound awareness of cultural issues to their residents, it improves quality of life, conveys interest, concern and respect. This can only enhance relationships and rapport with your residents and their family

This is an interactive course developed by The Systems 3 Group, to provide staff with the knowledge to enhance the quality of life of residents with culturally diverse background whilst complying with the Accreditation Standards. This program keeps us focussed on the individual, but provides context about the cultural background.

Course Name: Risk Assessment in Aged Care – 1 Day

Course Code: MA04

Overview:

Many aged care service providers are using risk assessment techniques to review, and improve safety for both residents and staff. Most understand the concept of assessing and controlling risk, but are looking for further information on the practical application of risk management techniques.

The concept of this course is to provide aged care facilities with practical information on how to apply risk assessment techniques to, not only safety, but also broader staff, management and stakeholder issues.

Course Name: Management Systems for Community Care

Course Code: MA01

Overview:

The fundamental objective of accreditation of community care packages is to ensure that care providers are competent to undertake these services, reliably, legally and in the best interests of the recipients. In other words, the programs are designed to deliver quality care to clients.

Accreditation is recognition that an organisation’s management system is capable to provide that care. Management systems are usually established against a set of standards, in this case, the Community Care Standards (CCP) or the Home and Community Care Standards (HACC).

The key criteria to be addressed in the establishment of a workable management system are:

  • Ensuring that the needs of clients are identified, met and continuously improved
  • Suiting the needs of a small organisation which may include volunteers
  • Suiting the needs of an organisation which may work outside of an office environment
  • Meeting the requirements of the standards
  • Capability to stand up to the scrutiny of accreditation
  • Providing adequate, but simple documentation.
